Rural women from the relatively isolated region of Kutch in western India have a tradition of vibrant hand embroidery.  Often embellished with mirrors, the handwork communicates not only a woman's artistic skills, but frequently her tribal affiliation as well. The embroidery on this piece was stitched by a woman from the Rabari tribe.  Rabaris are known for their expertise in camel breeding and for their traditionally nomadic way of life.  Their embroidery incorporates square chain stitches and mirrors in multiple shapes.
