This piece features a Koala Bear and is professionally matted and framed. (The framing and matting cost well over $100) To date, there are only 12 certified masters in Bunka Embroidery, certified by the ABEA - American Bunka Embroidery Association . She has retired and we are featuring her works of art for the first time for public sale. We have approximately 20 pieces certified by her. The frame measures 19" X 16" with a depth of 1 1/2". Extremely well done by one of the few certified masters in the art of Bunka. Near mint to mint condition with no issues but a few nicks on the frame. Colors are bright and vibrant. Bunka Shishu is a Japanese cultural embroidery technique. Commonly called "Bunka" or pronounced 'Boonka' in Japan. Bunka Shishu translates to a painting of thread--which is what many of the pictures look like by those who are viewing.
Bunka embroidery is also called Japanese Punch Needle Embroidery and threadpainting. It's both an art and a craft that originated over 100 years ago in Japan. A punch needle is used to apply rayon threads to fabric using a variety of techniques. Bunka embroidery creates the appearance of delicately shaded painting and the thread is never knotted. Because most often the thread has been 'pulled' to 2/4, its 'kinks' from being unraveled actually self know on the back side of the work while stitching. The thread is the same type of thread that is used in today's graduation tassels from many schools and universities. I remember the tread from tassels on lamps in my Grandmothers house--she was very upset if one of those tassels had become unraveled! However, that is just what Bunka stitchers do.
Council of Masters The Council of Masters (CoM) is the group of veteran ABEA members who have reached the status of Semi Master or Master through the organization's certification process who act as the Board of Directors. The CoM ensures that both the short and long term interests of the organization and its members are being considered.
